HOSTING IS OUR HERITAGE

Welcome to our place.

MAKING HOSTING MAGIC TOGETHER

The magic of the vacation rental experience is in the discovery, the connection, the personalized experience. We’re here to take care of the details, so all you need to be planning is what to wear & whether you’ll be cooking or dining out during your stay. From our photos, descriptions & FAQs to our area Guidebook, rental agreement & pre-arrival communication, our goal is to help you feel at home here before you even arrive! While we may not meet each other in person during your stay, you’re part of our little community while you’re here.

Lisa goes the extra mile to make sure we feel comfortable & welcome.

We make vacation rental magic together

A white woman with brown eye and wire-rimmed round glasses smiles into the camera. Her dark blonde har is pulled back and a tan striped scarf is around her neck. The background is filled with trees in fall foliage, a small lake in the background, and a blue sky overhead.

I’m your host, Lisa!

My pronouns are she/her/hers.

I live for magic moments right in the middle of the beautiful chaos in our lives. Those moments when you find an anchor amid the gale – a listening ear, an idea, a sensory moment.

It somehow puts the complex into slow motion and you see simple truths becoming crystal clear, transforming the arc of your future like Quicksilver in the X-Men Days of Future Past kitchen scene.

For me it’s most often the voices of the woods, water and wind that help me slow down enough to find the magic in between. I opened Painted Turtle Lake Retreat on my little acreage in 2018 as a hobby in partnership with my parents, after moving out of West Central Winnipeg and experiencing the gifts of this spot myself. I knew it needed to be shared.

Life has always invited me to these in between moments.

📍        I grew up as a third-culture kid between southeastern Manitoba and the savannah of Burkina Faso, experiencing belonging, culture and language through a kaleidoscope lens.
✨        Ten years in the hospitality industry across several provinces as a young adult taught me how to plan ahead for every detail to be just so, in order for my guests to be able to simply relax and enjoy the present sensory moment of bliss.
🤝        Twelve-plus years as a community-based peacebuilder taught me how to co-create brave space for those simple, transformative truths.
🛌        And since 2019, living bedbound with a sudden and severe chronic illness has taught me to live every day in the moment, experiencing my body and my illness as teacher and guide.

I hope to gift you a clear, fresh space for you to fill with your own in between moments.

Every now and then you need to release everything you’ve been carrying and get a fresh perspective, maybe giggle a little and enjoy lightness and delight.

And when you step back into your beautiful, complex everyday world somehow the obstacles aren’t as high anymore. The colours are brighter, you’re that much stronger and you are more deeply rooted in your own purpose.

Making the dream happen.

Cathleen

Housekeeping
I'm Cathleen, the 'cleaning star' as my Mom called me at a young age. I've always been a clean freak which led me to my very first job at a nursing home in the housekeeping department. It didn't take long and I was the head of the department. Then I went on to work as a Care Aide in a hospital and a nursing home. My interest in helping people led me to work with adults with intellectual disabilities. I've always enjoyed helping others and making it clean and comfortable for them. Now, as I work on my own, cleaning homes, meeting the homeowners and families, it's my pleasure to leave their home sparkling clean. To sum up my interest in cleaning, my 6 words of passion about my job are: comfort, relaxing, content, supportive, and rewarding!

John & Charity

Maintenance & Admin
John grew up a farm boy in southern Manitoba, with a deep appreciation for the land and a vision for feeding the world with the work of our hands. Charity was born and raised among the Chokwe people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. John and Charity raised their children partly in Burkina Faso, West Africa and in Manitoba. Later they spent 15 years in Congo. John and Charity both come from Mennonite heritage with its emphasis on living simply and peaceably in community. They internalized the values of sharing learned from the communal societies worldwide in which they have lived. “Our family motto is ‘Open heart, open home.’ Throughout our marriage, we’ve found meaning and joy in sharing the blessing of our home. The decision to develop John’s pottery shop — turned granny suite — into a short term vacation rental business was a natural branching off of our lifelong hosting habit. We jumped at the chance to build it together with our daughter, Lisa.”
