We’re totally biased, but we think we have the best little spot around! We are located in the countryside within the township of Giroux, 10 mins northeast of Steinbach and 10 mins northwest of La Broquerie, right beside Quarry Oaks Golf & Country Club. We are about 45 mins southeast of Winnipeg’s east perimeter. You can find us on Google Maps at Painted Turtle Lake Retreat.
You must be over 21 to book the studio, with capacity for up to 2 guests. We have a minimum stay of 2 nights, although we may accept last-minute single night bookings (check our calendar). A credit card is required to book, even with a gift certificate, to facilitate our security deposit hold. Once you have submitted a booking, we will hold your dates for up to 24 hours while you sign our rental agreement and provide us with your government-issued photo ID.
We have several accessible features. There are no stairs or steps to enter or move around the studio. There is a 2” lip on the threshold, and there is also a tall step up to the steam shower. We supply a sturdy step-stool in the bathroom for folks who need it. All our doors are 31” wide, and our double front doors can be opened fully to 60” wide.
We stock the studio with cleaning & personal care products from The Unscented Co. in order to reduce scent irritations in the studio.
The beach is located at the bottom of a slight hill. We have built concrete steps into the hill for ease of access. Contact us before booking if you have any additional accessibility questions.
We try to simplify your packing list as much as possible! You need to bring your own clothes & groceries, or be prepared to buy food or groceries when you arrive. You may wish to bring fishing gear, outdoor clothing, snowshoes & cross-country skis as appropriate for your season of travel.
Check out our Explore page for suggestions of local restaurants & grocery stores.
The studio has a fully stocked kitchen including kitchen utensils, pots, pans, basic small appliances, olive oil, salt & pepper and mixed spices. We supply toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, dishwashing detergent and dish soap. We also provide a hair dryer, an iron & ironing board, shampoo & conditioner, body wash, hand soap, lotion, linens, towels, beach towels & beach chairs, sunscreen & bugspray.
You’ll receive access to our House Manual with a full list of amenities once you’ve confirmed your booking.
Yes, we have free wifi! You will have full connectivity for shows, music, zoom calls & working remotely. You will find the wifi name & passcode posted in the studio and in the House Manual.
Give the gift of relaxation! Click here for gift certificate options. You can also contact us directly if you would like to purchase a custom length of stay for your loved one.
You will have the option to purchase third party trip insurance during your checkout process. We encourage our guests to consider purchasing insurance as we are not able to absorb the cost of unexpected trip changes outside of our stated policies.
We love the quiet & rejuvenation of country living! Our property is accessed by up to 2.5 miles of gravel road, depending on your direction of travel. The road is generally well maintained, but it may get rough after heavy precipitation and during the spring thaw. There is never any risk of flooding. We give guests alternate routes on rare occasions when necessary.
We are not currently accepting pets due to health issues. We may be able to welcome appropriately-trained service animals as long as we can make arrangements ahead of time that accommodate our health issues. Please inquire before booking to discuss.
If you like to travel with your pet, feel free to check back at a later date as we look forward to being a pet-friendly destination again once our situation changes.
When we do accept pets, we will charge a pet fee which covers a deep clean of the studio after each pet guest as a courtesy to future guests who need the safety of a dander-free environment.
We are animal lovers! There are two dogs on the yard, although guests do not have much contact with them unless they want to. Hank, who lives upstairs, is a black medium sized dog. He is very mild-mannered and doesn’t spend much time outside. We also have a large, friendly black & tan dog named Toffee. We keep her on our side of the yard away from the guest house so guests can choose whether they would like to meet Toffee or not. Details are sent to guests upon booking; most guests love Toffee but we are also set up for folks who prefer to keep their distance.
The studio looks over its own corner of the yard, while the full yard is shared between guests, host family, and the loft tenants above the studio. The loft tenants keep reasonable hours. You can hear their dog, Hank, trotting around upstairs but he does not bark and goes to bed on his humans’ schedule.
Guests have 100% private access to the entire studio suite with their own entrance, full kitchen, queen bed, 3-piece bath, free laundry, office desk & private patio. You may meet us, the loft neighbours & occasionally our own private visitors while enjoying the outdoors.
A propane barbeque, shared with the host family, is kept outside the studio’s back door (propane supplied). Other outdoor amenities shared between studio guests, host family and loft tenants include hammocks, lake, beach & loungers, beach fire pit & charcoal grill. A canoe & floaties are available upon request
We take your health seriously! We are Clean It Right certified through the Manitoba Tourism Education Council & we follow Airbnb’s Enhanced Cleaning Protocol during our turnovers. We also ventilate the space thoroughly using the fan on our A/C system.
Nope, we’ve got you covered! Firewood, matches, briquettes and fire starter are provided.
Painted Turtle Lake is a mini lake with a big personality! It is a remnant of a gravel quarry from years ago. It’s 2 acres in size and nearly 30 feet deep, fed by a network of underground streams. Our acreage has private access to the beach and lakefront (shared between guests, host family, and upstairs tenants), as the entire west shore sits against our yard while the opposite shore borders Quarry Oaks Golf Course. The lake is full of turtles & jackfish, which make great company in the summer.
We live on Treaty 1 territory: the Original Lands of Anishinaabeg, Ininiw, Anisininiw, Dakota, and Dene peoples, and Homeland of the Red River Métis Nation. 3% of our profits support Indigenous-led projects to reclaim land and ceremony.
